Basic Certificate in Medical and Health Science Education

This Certificate is aimed at equipping you with some knowledge of pedagogy, the art of teaching or facilitating students as they learn. It includes modules on teaching and learning as well as modules on assessment of learning.

Before you start the course you must register.
Failure to register will result in no recognition of your completion of the course.

The 10 Core modules

  1. Qualities of a good health science educator / clinical teacher
  2. Learning theory
  3. Planning a teaching session
  4. Teaching large groups
  5. Teaching small groups
  6. Curriculum development and evaluation
  7. Assessment of learning
  8. Setting and marking MCQ
  9. Blue printing and Standard setting
  10. Evaluating your teaching

Required Optional modules

Those involved in Clinical teaching should complete the following 2 modules:

  1. CT 1. Clinical / bedside teaching
  2. CT 2. Setting and marking OSCE

Those involved in Biomedical Science and Health professions teaching should complete the following module:

  1. BMS 1. Setting and marking OSPE

 

Each week a new module will be released. Each module contains a presentation which lasts approximately 20 minutes except the first one which lasts 30 minutes. You can pause, fast forward or rewind the module at any stage. Make sure your volume is turned up so you don’t miss any of the audio.

There will also be a short MCQ quiz at the end of each module. You must pass all the quizzes to complete the certificate but there is no limit to the number of attempts you can make. Some modules will also include a pdf handout or recommended further reading. Once all the modules have been released they will remain accessible to you if you wish to revise any topic in the future. The course is mandatory for all College of Medicine academic staff and you are encouraged to complete the modules as they are released .

Alternatively the recorded presentations are also available on CD ROM from the COMETO office or by contacting Mr Ishmael Nyirenda on inyirenda@medcol.mw . However the MCQ quizzes do require internet access for completion.

 

Completion of your Certificate

Once you have successfully completed all the necessary modules, inform Mr Nyirenda at inyirenda@medcol.mw or at the COMETO office.

In order to complete your BCMHSE you must also provide evidence of satisfactory evaluation of teaching. This should take the form of student feedback and peer feedback on teaching. Student feedback forms are available in hard copy from COMETO office or at the link below (FORM A). Peer feedback forms will be available from the COMETO office in due course.
